Last Wednesday afternoon I’m hanging out at home, minding my own business. The kids are watching their third cartoon while I’m making dinner (refreshing my browser repeatedly in hopes that someone has updated her Facebook status) and all of a sudden I hear screaming in the living room. I figure it’s just a spider so I stay focused on Facebook. However, the screaming continues, so I reluctantly decide to investigate. I dutifully walk into the living room and . . .
SISTER IS STANDING ON MY RUG.
SISTER IS IN MY LIVING ROOM.
SISTER IS HOME FROM AFRICA.
SHE SURPRISED US.
SISTER IS HOME.
And so I don’t even really know where to start.

Since she got home on Wednesday, we’ve been celebrating and talking and squeezing each other and talking and talking and ceaselessly talking. We’ve been planning and jumping up and down a lot and squealing at Husband and Boyfriend, to whom I have received formal permission to introduce you. I’ll give you the skinny on John later, but for now all you need to know is that he is loveable and brilliant and patient and fun, fun, fun . . . and that Sister becomes even more Sistery around him. She gets even shinier which is just almost ridiculous. He is good, She is good. They are good. God is good.

You should also be warned that if you meet John, you will want to keep a safe distance. Tish fell in love with John the first time she met him, and has since referred to him as “my boyfriend, Johnny.” And she’s definitely the jealous type. She once knocked Amma over for trying to sit next to him. You’ve been warned.
Bubba, Tisha, Sister, John, and I went to my cousin’s wedding in Ohio this past weekend. I got to see my Sister hug my parents for the first time since leaving for Africa and I just thought we all might explode.
And then, at Allison’s wedding, we danced. All of us, Sister and Tisha and Bubba and me . . . all my cousins and aunts and uncles. . . John, too . . . we danced for five hours. There’s a reason Jesus says heaven is like a wedding. Because what else can heaven be but all the people you love in one place with nothing else to do except drink wine and laugh and celebrate love and hope and family. And also do the Chicken Dance and the Stanky Leg. I’ve never been so happy. I’ve also never been so ridiculous. For example:

There are many more unfortunate pictures to come, promise. Let’s just say there was some table dancing. For now, I’ll assume that this shot gives you enough of an idea about how the night went down.
In other news . . . Tuesday was Chase’s first day of second grade and all went smoothly.
The only two teeny problems were that Amma became hysterical that her brother had left her and Chase was humiliated that we were the only family wearing our pajamas at the bus stop.
When we got there, he whispered, “SEE, MOM, nobody else is wearing pjs. I told you.” And I whispered back, “How do you know??? Maybe they just sleep really fancy.” And he gave me this look.
I get this look a LOT. This look of Chase’s means: You’re embarrassing, mom, but I know you’re doing the best you can. And you’re funny.” I love this look. And I love this boy. He is his dad. . . in his face and in his heart. God, I’m a lucky girl.
Also, yesterday was Craig and my eighth anniversary. Nana came over to stay with the kids while we went out and talked for hours over dinner. The outcome of our State of the Marriage conversation is that: We continue to have no idea what we're doing . . . and that continues to be okay. Life is good. Hard, but good. God is good. And all will be well. We decided to love each other the best we can for another year. Then we came home and made out. Good stuff.
Now it’s five am and my Sister will be back on my doorstep in five short hours so I must go and make lists of things we will be discussing today. Sister and I have always believed that we are just a few cups of coffee and uninterrupted hours away from saving the universe . . . so we’ll be working on that.
In addition to universe saving, today there will be make-up shopping and a field trip with the girls and lots of squeezing hands and I can’t believe you’re heres and I love you, Sisters and please don't leave agains. And I’m sure they’ll also be plenty of debate about What’s Next For My Hair.
I love my Sister.

Love you, too.
G
Also, no, she's not home for good. She goes back to Africa in three days. But it's not time to worry about that now, because it's still TODAY.
ReplyDeleteLove, G
Yaaaaaaaaaay for surprise visits!!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you're having a wonderful time together. Enjoy it :) :) :)
Enjoy TODAY! What fun!
ReplyDeleteSo, so, so MANY good things abou this post but the one that stood out the most to me is: you made out with Craig ;) You go girl - and way to take one for the Monkee team!
ReplyDeleteHappy Rosh Hashanah All!
ReplyDeleteEverything is NEW!
G,
ReplyDeleteLove this post. I was smiling the entire time reading it. You were just screaming "JOY" from every word. What is really cool is that like when someone smiles at you it is hard to not smile back...this post is making me feel joyous and I just squeezed my babies and kissed them an extra bit this morning and now they are giggling and smiling. Thanks for spreading the joy into our little nook this morning.
BUT, my favorite, favorite, favorite part of this whole thing is your comment...."But it's not time to worry about that now, because it's still TODAY." That is some serious truth and I'm happy for you that you have figured it out. Some people don't...it took me a little bit before I figured out that wisdom.
enjoy your coffee, your lobster and all the joy TODAY.

YAY! I'm sooo glad to hear that you got Sister back! That's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteSo so so many things to comment about on this wonderful post but let's leave it at this, the joy is actually palpable in your words. God is good. (And you Doyle girls sure can snag good looking men!) :)
ReplyDeletePS - Joey posted on her blog something about "her friend Mandy back from Africa" and I almost spit out my coffee yesterday and kept waiting, wondering! So glad to see it really was SISTER! Enjoy these beautiful moments!!
That was my first question, glad you made a comment about if she was staying for good.
ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting week for you guys. So happy that Mandy found someone, they make a beautiful couple.
I feel like I haven't been able to get in a comment all summer, and now my house is so quiet I can't think (is that possible???) I was grinning from ear to ear reading this. You have no idea how happy I am that you have some time with Sister - what a blessing! (And John is so cute!) Happy anniversary and congrats on the makeout session - that's always a fun time :). And happy first day to Chase (please tell him I still wear my pajamas to the bus stop and my poor 7th grader stands at his stop across the street in shame while I stand with the little ones. I just can't seem to get 4 people ready in the morning!) Enjoy your day with Sister!
ReplyDeleteOh sister Mandy. I'm so happy you're with sister Glen. I wish sister could come to Florida and dance with you too. My heart is all a pitter patter that you're home for a spell to tell all of your humbling and crazy stories. :)
ReplyDeleteThis was delicious. I love that we introduced John and that we got an insight into what you and Mandy do when it's just you girls. I love you both so much.
ReplyDeletePS. I think you should leave the hair!! You look really really really good!!! I love it!
Too wonderful for words, so I won't even bother to try. I'll just say how so happy I am for you and your whole family. Keep on dancin' girl! xoxo
ReplyDeleteSOOOO exciting - saw her pic on Joanna's page and let out a big "OH!" at work, no less!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this post for all the reasons above. Take tons more pictures and just squeeze her for all of us!!!!
It's a truly beautiful day!
Love you Sisters ~
Welcome back Sister!!! This post made me feel all giddy and excited for you two! And John and Craig too... happy girlfriend + happy wife must equal happy boyfriend and happy husband.
ReplyDeleteThe post also made me thankful for the gift of sisterhood, my awesome little sister and the sisterhood of the blogger kind and all other such ordinary happy miraculous things!!
enjoy your day!!
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSniff, sniff. Yay for sisters. Of all kinds. Please have loads of fun, savor each moment, and don't forget I'm still sweating.
ReplyDeleteTova
SUPER FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I'm so happy for you all. And I agree with Joey - your hair looks great!
ReplyDeleteLove,
J
I just got home from taking my daughter to her two month checkup (a month late, btw) and was staring at all the boxes I have to unpack and feeling really tired, so I thought I'd see what was up on Momastery...YAY!!! I'm so happy for you guys, it's giving me energy to go unpack another box!:) Enjoy your time.:)
ReplyDeletewow!!! what FUN!!!
ReplyDeleteFABULOUS!!! And, I'm a huge fan of your hair.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you guys. I love that you were surprised. That's the best surprise ever!
ReplyDeleteFrom all of the amazing things I've read and heard about Sister, she and Johnny Lynch sound like a match made in heaven. Such a beautiful couple. So happy you all are together. I can feel the love from here : )
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary C & G!
Tried to say YAY this morning but got an ERROR 303! ewwwwwwww. Anyway, so happy for you and seeing your sister. Glad the kids got off to school alright! Hey, I went outside this AM in my PJ bottoms and my work shirt I slept in from the night before! Yikes. Talk about a walking disaster! I'm getting brave in my older years. Glad no one was out there ....although if Adrianne saw she probably got a good giggle!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Mandy and John is a cutie. Happy Anniversary G and C!
So very, very wonderful! I am thrilled you and Sister have this time together. And all of the pictures? Perfect! Well, the one of you dancing is a little scary, but I'll learn to deal.
ReplyDeleteYippee!! So fun! Happy visit with sister. Enjoy every minute of it. Happy Anniversary to you...glad you enjoyed every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteSo glad for you:) Enjoy her and the special relationship that you two have...not all sisters have it so ENJOY and bring on the pictures. I would love to dance with you and some of the monkees at a wedding..nothing better than dancing on tables!
ReplyDeleteI think someone else said this, but I was SMILING the whole time I was reading this! Love it with all my heart and soul - sister being home, the overabundant joy at having her home (these ARE two separate things, you know), Chicken Dances and Stanky Legs (and was that a little bit o' John Travolta??), Chase's first day of school, his smile-and-everything-will-be-okay-even-if-my-family-is-the-only-one-wearing-jammies, sister's new honeybunny, the picture of Craig with his blackberry & coffee on the first day of school, State of the Marriage conversation, eighth anniversary - ALL OF IT!!! Love it. Love Momastery. Love YOU, Glennon!
ReplyDeleteI'm sooooo happy for you that you have your sister close. Reading your post I kept saying to my self "yes! That is how I feel about my sister! This could be us!" And long-distance sistering is incredibly tough. I'm on the East Coast, she's on the West. I'm afraid to fly so we only get to see each other maybe once a year. To make up for it we talk on the phone almost every day and are closer now than we've ever been. BUT this is not about me, it's about you! And your sister! Thanks for sharing her (and all the amazing people in your life) with us. Hope you all continue to have a blast!
ReplyDeletewith all of my heart, what I want most is that my Julia and Anna grow up to love each other the way that you and Sister do. Not sure what that recipe is (perhaps I should ask your mom and dad : )
ReplyDeleteSo excited that you and Mandy get some good time together. I love her. I love you. And I love me some Johnny.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that I will see you this weekend at a wedding?
What a happy post! So many wonderful things! Have a great time with sister and keep rocking the PJs at the bus stop, it is the only way to go.
ReplyDeleteYaaaaaaaaaay sister! I love it!! AND IS THAT THE DRESS YOU FORGOT AT THE DRY CLEANERS FOR A WHOLE YEAR???? The green one in the wedding??? It's Betsey Johnson, right?
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a GREAT time with Sister!
Abbey B.
Thank you for spreading your joy. I love that idea of going to heaven being like a wedding! I've lost three really important women in my life this winter and can't wait to go to that "wedding" and catch up with them. So awesome! Thank you! You brought smiles to face :)
