Theology

Co-incidence is the word we use when we can’t see the levers and pulleys- Emma Bull

It’s a rainy Sunday afternoon, and Craig’s taken the kids out to give me a chance to “clean the house.”

Riiiiiiight.

Being in my house alone is my favorite thing these days. Man, I love my family, and wow, I love it when they leave for a bit.

I need to talk to you about my dog, Theo, whom I love so much I could die.

Theo’s been groomed. Shaved, really. He was so matted from being on the streets that our only choice was to start over. He looks so different. Still precious, though. When I saw him all hairless I started worrying that he’d be cold and so I immediately bought him a new winter wardrobe. Craig had no comment about that. Wise man, that one.

Theo’s groomer said that he was extremely hand shy with her, and she predicted that he’d been abused. I can’t really talk about that, other than to say that it’s okay. We are healing together.

I whisper this to him a lot:

The kids and Theo and I were at the pet store the other day . . . just cruisin’ the aisles. We can’t find many other places that will invite our whole family in, so we’ve found ourselves wandering the Pet Smart aisles often. All five of us were looking at the birds when a nice lady and her teenage daughter walked over to us, sat down on the dirty floor, and started petting Theo. The women asked me if Theo was a Lhasa Apso and shared that her favorite dog had also been a Lhasa. She told me how wonderful her doggie was and how much she missed him. Theo clearly loved this lady, so I did too.

Our Lhasa Lady looked up at me and asked, Does he like to sit on your lap?

Oh, yes. I said. My lap is really the only place he wants to be. He’d stay there all day if I let him.

The woman smiled and said, “Yep, mine did, too. Lhasas are bred to be lapdogs, you know, because of how they’re used in the monasteries.”

Ummmm.

What?

I’m sorry. Did you say, how they’re used in monasteries?

Oh yes, she continued. Lhasa Apsos are bred in Tibet as monastery dogs. Since the monasteries aren’t heated, the dogs sit on the monks' laps and keep them warm while they pray.

Of course they do. Of course.

Lovies. Theo is a freaking MONKEE.

I love you too, God.

Have a great week, friends. There are no co-incidences. Don’t worry. Everything’s going to be amazing.

You’ll see.

Love, G and T

  6. How sweet! Just what I needed on a rainy Sunday afternoon when church was a disappointment and a nap was just beginning to improve my mood. Our little Teeko was abused, too, but he's ended up with serious fear aggression - so sad that even with beaucoup love, the abuse is still an active memory.

  16. I feel so silly for not telling you this tid-bit of information in my email the other day. I did a lot of research before getting my Lhaso and knew that they were bred for the monasteries of Tibet. They are also hpyo allergenic because they have long hair (hard to believe but true-I can explain why if you want me to). Also, he doesn't really NEED a sweater because they were bred in Tibet and are conditioned for cold. However, they are adorable in sweaters so he may WANT to wear them and look good.

  17. THANK YOU GOD!!! I could hardly move on from the first photo of him licking his little snout. He's amazing. I LOVE HIM!!! I have learned so much from the pure and unconditional love from animals. Such precious gifts they are...

  20. Love the under bite, love the monastery dog, love the hoodie idea...but...

A white fluffy dog? Ok. Suspending judgment and trusting that he is amazing. Unlike all the other white fluffy dogs I have met. Also, he has me at 'hand shy'. Me too, Theo, me too.

  21. And while he may look at you sometimes like you're crazy, he will NOT talk back. His little face is just about the cutest thing I've see all day.

So, will Pet Smart carry Monkee Hoodies for dogs? Marketing, girl, marketing!

A friend mine says there is no coincidence, just Godincidence

  22. Tova- You saw this, right? Any news about when Joy'll be home? We'll need to have a hoodie ready for her, too...

  23. Yes, I just saw it. Sigh...Hallelujah, and yippee all in one.

Also, no way is Joy getting a hoodie before I get one! :)

Timing? Well...adoption is kind of like poker. Could be 2 months, could be 8 months. PRAYING like mad (more like begging) that it's closer to 2 months.

  24. OMG! I absolutely LOVE this post mostly because I have a Lhasa Apso that looks just like Theo (white, most precious face EVER) and I have written some of my best poetry about the love I have for this dog of mine, Adonis (named that way 'cause he totally is one - LOL). And yes, for the record, I also now have a beautiful daughter too, but Adonis was my first real unbridled love for a being that I had to care for and nurture...my first baby. When looking for a dog we also loved the fact that they were bred in Tibet, originally for the monasteries, and that they are lap dogs for us now. Also, FYI, that this is why they are also relatively quiet dogs who will only bark when they feel their family is being intruded on by an outsider, or so I read. Enjoy every second of Theo because, like children, they grow up quickly, and sadly their lives are much shorter...however, the best part of Theo's life is just beginning - Yay!
