Spring

Last week was warm here in Virginia. The neighbors emerged, the kids got dirty, deep breaths of fresh air were enjoyed. And then - quick as it disappeared - winter returned. Lots of sassy pedicures are languishing beneath wool socks this week. The neighbors are all back in their homes and the kids are frustrated. The weathermen keep threatening snow. They live for snow, those guys.

Everybody’s complaining about the return of the cold, but I like it. It feels like a reprieve. It’s like the SPRING! alarm went off and God hit snooze.

I love spring, but fall and winter are more comfortable to me. My reclusive side, my writer side, my thinker side, my cozy side, my a-little-bit-selfish and nervous-about-the-world side loves weather that suggests staying home. Spring calls - Come out come, out wherever you are! - but I never feel quite finished hiding yet. Tough luck. Hiding in the winter is cozy and sensible and sweet, but hiding in the Spring is depression. So every year in April, Spring announces - IT’S SHOWTIME! and all of those parts of me that I’ve let go during the past six months… eyebrows, legs, teeth, stray facial hairs, clothes, feet, roots, personality. . .they’re all on display under the bright, bright sun. And all of a sudden, there are people everywhere. People, people, everywhere. And they’re not in hurry anymore, because the cold air isn’t forcing them back inside. So I must remember how to make small talk. And big talk, often. Not just write it, but talk it.

I’m here! Hopeful, optimistic Spring calls as she flits around, weightless, and waves her sparkly magic wand."I’m back! Now Bloom everybody, BLOOM!"

Thank God for hopeful, optimistic Spring. If not for her relentless invitations, I’d stay safe and cramped in my winter cocoon forever. Nature’s rhythm helps me, forces me, to be a better person. Yay, God.

I’ve spent the last few cold days – my reprieve- decorating my house. I’ve never mentioned it before, but I love to decorate. Move things around, Craig calls it. It’s the homemakiest part of me. Mostly I love to decorate with old things, given-up-on things, discarded things. I like to find a way to prove they are still beautiful and still useful.

Like Spring.

Anyway, here is my family room.

I’d be happy to show you more of my home if you’d like, but I don’t want to assume you’re into that sort of thing. I, for one, am a bit obsessed with peeking into other people’s homes. So…two obsessions, I guess: gays and house tours. A-HA. This must explain my love for Mr. Berkus. He’s the double threat.

The sign was made by Kristi and I just love it. It makes me think of all of you and the good, hard work we’ve done here during the past two years.

Come closer and check out the sticky note I added.

Thanks for visiting me.

Love, G

  1. I'm jealous. So jealous. Years of military housing have meant lots of mismatched pieces found on Craig's List, bought more because we could afford it than because it was tasteful, and tons of crap that I can never find the time to *just throw out, already*. I've come to realize that my living quarters are too close a reflection of my inner self; and I am so, so ready for some "moving things around," myself.

    Helllloooooo, spring cleaning!

  2. Aww your house is so pretty,g! I'd love to see more of your home.

I put lots and lots of thought into decorating but never actually do it because I'm pretty sure I have zero fashion sense. I do love me some nate b. though!

ps. spring is my 3rd favorite season and summer is my first worst season.

  3. Ooh! Beautiful! I want to visit. And then, I want YOU to visit, and decorate my space EXACTLY the same! Very, very inspiring!! Thanks for giving us a peek, and I, for one, would love to see more. Also--what you said about hibernating and Spring making us NOT hibernate--my thoughts EXACTLY! You did it again!

  5. G,
I love it! I am reading this on my phone while I am at work (actually, I work at Inova blood donor services in sterling, right across from the mall. Giving blood could be a wonderful reason for the monkeys to get together...) just sayin.... anyways I can't read the the sticky note, what does it say? I LOVE to see other peoples homes too. Does this house have a screened in porch?

  10. Where do you find old things? I am wanting to buy old things like shutters and blue mason jars (Kristi!), just random stuff that reminds me that I am a southern gal, cottage-y, even. But where? Antique stores? Aren't they pricey? Goodwill? Seems like my local goodwill is just clothing. I am wanting a side of the road run down store kind of place that is full of the misc. in life. Where do I find such a place?

  11. I feel the same way about spring and summer, So much effort just to appear normal.
I love, love, love! that pillow! and the sign, and the sticky note, and well, everything. Nice work, lady!
i personally would love to see more of your decorative talents, i love that kind of stuff.

  12. Tricia...

I got the shutters and old door at a wonderful place called Old Luckett's Store in Lucketts va. They were sitting out in the rain behind a barn...I repainted the door and left the shutters as is.
I got the wicker-ish chairs at Goodwill...20 bucks each...the tray of candles is actually a drawer from a table that somebody threw away... I just put a new knob on it and filled it up.
The other white tray was a crazy cheetah print tray that I bought for a dollar at goodwill and spray painted and then sanded for a older look.
The coffee table was made by Bubba out of a single piece of wood.
I bought the white windsor chairs at Goodwill for 5 bucks each.
Rug and linen drapes are Pottery Barn.
Also..topiaries on the mantle and red basket..Goodwill.

    :)

  17. tricia....goodwill, yard sales, craigslist, thrift stores. antique stores can be pricey, but not always. i actually got my blue mason jars on etsy because i am very impatient and didn't want to wait until some turned up at my local thrift stores. anna probably has some good ideas on where to find things too!

the hunt for the treasure is a lot of fun...enjoy!

  18. Oh Glennon....

See, I knew Martha actually had nothing on you...did you actually say you painted and sanded something for an older look? I loved your house right up until you explained that you are a hunter and gatherer...and then I just felt depressed. Its too beautiful, and like most beautiful things it turns out that it takes a lot of work.

By the way...where do the kids live?

And I love the pillow...a client sent me my favorite card that looks like the English "keep calm and carry on" sign but instead it says, "Freak out and throw stuff..." My husband is English and I am trained in a type of therapy that uses breaking plates as a way to access anger. It was the best card I have ever gotten....

    now I want that pillow.

    Smooches, monkees...

  21. C'est Magnifique! It is really, very pretty. I adore pretty and inviting spaces. and yours is one.
okay. I love your curtains. I am obsessed with topiaries. Really, it is borderline weird. Love the black bench and the red shutters. Impressed and exasperated that you did that yourself. I need better time/management skills. oh, and the old drawer/candle combo. those really compliment each other! Lastly, I love the fact that the magazine rack was Chase's bed ladder; now it isn't just cool, but full of character and your family's personal history. Love those types of pieces.

  22. I love the part about how God hit the snooze button! Your house is beautiful! I love the whites, beiges and splashes of color. I'm obsessed about homes too and watch way too many home shows. I love the beige walls - I searched and searched and had every paint chip in beige ever created... finally chose one and on the wall it turned out khaki - too much green in it. I hate it. My husband doesn't want a redo! I want to see more!

To The Mommy One - Luckett's has some great stores with tons of old stuff. Try there if you are local.

    Have a great week Glennon.

  23. Beautiful! I too like the snooze button part. I had spring break last week, but the kids still had their normal school schedule. I can't say I was totally disappointed in the colder weather...I got to snuggle back inside for the week :)

Love your decorating style. Amazing finds that you truly know how to display/use. Would love to see more :)

    Have a great day!

  24. ....G-Rock - tell Bubba I love his table, I came back to look at your pics again, you are so creative...my gpa made a table similar to yours ions ago. My gpa has made lots of furniture. I come from a long line of woodworkers and cabinet makers so I appreciate wood. My brother Danny (Walter - getting the name out there) does custom work and has a shop in his basement in South Riding. (G I will send you a pic of the office cabinets he just built for his office). If you want anything built, contact me...and anyone else for that matter.Unfortunately this economy doesn't appreciate hand made furniture and he has been bounced around from shop to shop lately. Anyway, thanks for letting me brag on my bro! I love him so much. Hope I didn't break any rules!

  26. oh, yes, and please put up more pictures!! I loooove to look at people's homes! you could even do it now, if you wanted? just throwing that out there, now that I have discovered you are this whiz at time management...

  27. G,

Of course I love your house. It looks just like I would have though.

I always swing back and forth between wanting to get rid of everything in our 700 sq ft apartment and live with the bare miniminum and wanting more, more, more, stuff. When I get the urge to do the latter, I'll just come gaze at your pictures and fantasize that I live in your orderly, spacious, sweetly decorated house and try to ignore our floor to ceiling STUFF.

Also, whatever "lady points" you lose for not cooking, you totally make up for in decorating. I can cook but can't clean to save my life. It all evens out in the end, right?

We should totally keep each other motivated. I've dedicated this week to Deep Cleaning and Purging. Already made the trash/donation pick-up date for Friday... no more excuses.

  29. I love looking at other people's houses too. More pictures please.

Once a month (the timing is the same every single month, you figure it out), I redecorate and move furniture in one room of our house. It's usually the family room. I don't travel at all so moving furniture around and having things different is my way of seeing something different every once in a while. Does that make sense?

probably not but I'm going with it.

  30. Sharyn,

Love it! I have a few sites that are always good for inspiring me to clean things out/simplify, including apartmenttherapy.com (esp the Small, Cool Contest) and http://www.zerowastehome.blogspot.com/

My problem is often that I clean everything out and then can't quite figure out how to get rid of it so I have piles of things in our storage area/laundry room. I need magical elves that do that last step.

  31. I am with you! Love the "thought" of Spring is great but for a homebody/ hermit like me it actually makes my stomach do flips. I always say it will get better , but 40 years later still gives me sweaty palms, just breathe...

Y'know what I do? Schedule a pick-up with the city garbage collectors, and another pick-up with the local community hospital's thrift store (Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters) on the same day. That way, all I have to do is put out all the trash on Thursday night, and put out the donations Friday afternoon, and it all gets picked up for me.

My biggest problem is with actually getting around to everything. We still have packed boxes from when we moved to California 6 years ago (since then we've moved to/from Texas, Virginia, Illinois, and now back in Virginia). It's pretty bad. Worse now that I have a baby as an excuse to be too busy to just Do It, Already.

But! Tonight I'm clearing out the guest closet, then getting to The Garage, which my husband believes should serve as a shrine to his hoarding habits. I plan, however, to arise victorious from the clutter!

Having all the windows and doors open is a great motivator to NOT have the neighbors peak in on mountains of junk. Ah, spring...

    Much Love,
    Sharyn

  33. Jennifer,

OMG! I get in an organizational/rearranging frenzy almost like clockwork too! It drives my wife NUTS. She's forever asking where I moved things and I do it so often I can't keep track.

For me, it's a simple way to feel like I have some control, to make order out of perceived chaos. Unfortunately for my wife Laura, it just makes more chaos for her :-(

    Sharyn, great idea!

  35. g-bird, it's beautiful. thoughtful. gentle. rescued. wise and witty. inviting. just like you. no surprise.

our house was built in the 70s. and that's pretty much the theme around here with our hand-me-downs. even when i buy new stuff, it's always distressed. what does this say about me.

i'm sweating. taking up carpet and plotting a trip to buy drapes this week.

    love.

  36. Just went back and read this post and I feel like you might be my soul twin - LOL. Don't be scared, I'm not a stalker, but much of what you write about (feelings, family, house decorating, style, dogs, past, etc., etc.) is a carbon copy of a lot of my life too. For example, I love the winter for the exact same reasons you do. My husband gives me shit about the fact that I celebrate daylight savings time at the beginning of winter b/c I might be the only person in the universe who actually welcomes the comfort and the darkness that envelopes us at that time of year, the coziness of it all. Many times I prefer to hibernate rather than conversate (is that a word, even? I am getting dumber by the day being a stay-at-home mom - ugh!)anyway. Oh...and I adore old things, too. I am always trying to find ways to repurpose old items. So, one thing great about the spring are the yard sales where I can find some awesome treasures. So, there is that at least, right? :-)
