Family Pictures

Monkees frequently ask me to post more pictures of my family. But I feel like the more pictures I post of me, the more you will feel like this blog is about me. My vision is that this blog is about you, not me. Even though I write about me, it’s all really about you. US, I guess. It’s blurry, my vision.

But in honor of your request: here is a picture of me.

This is Tish’s vision of me. It was posted on the wall of her pre-school classroom as a decoration for our Mother’s Day Tea last week. It is a gift to me. Sort of.

When I arrived at the tea, Tish proudly directed me to this picture and I smiled and hugged her. Then I made myself swear to myself that I would not ask her what the hell those purple spots all over my face were. And I didn’t ask, for about thirty whole seconds. Then I said:

“Honey. It’s beautiful. What are those purple circles all over my face?”

Tish said, “Those are your zits.”

I said, “Oh. I see. Wow. You added those, huh?”

Tish said, “Yep. Mrs. R. told us to close our eyes and think really hard about how our mommies look and then add details. Those zits are your details.”

Oh, I said.

I looked at the twelve other Mom Pictures hanging on the wall, all of whom looked like the after Proactive shots to my before shot.

I said, “That’s some great attention to detail, honey. The other kids didn’t add so many details, did they? Looks like they left some details out.” Nice kids, I thought to myself.

Tish looked around at the other mamas and then back at the pictures. She said, “No, the other kids added details, too. See…Mary’s mom has earrings and Brody’s mom has a headband. Those are their details. Your details are zits.”

So, anyway. Have a nice day.

Here we are, Tish and I. And to answer your question: HEAVY CONCEALER.

Love, G

  1. Love it! Sebastian made me a book at school and I just have to share:

    First page:
My Mom likes to: "hug me, sleep, kiss me and cook matzah balls" (mind you I am Catholic and this is something I never thought I would hear)
    Second page:
I love my Mom because: "she always helps me with my homework. And I can always rely on her. I love my Mom.:
    Third page:
My Mom wants me to: "make my handwriting better and make my clothes match."
    Fourth page:
My favorite book to read with Mom is: "The Bible and take home books."
My Mom makes great: "food like chicken tenders, matzah balls and your food is delish."
    Fifth page:
Mom you are special because: "you take care of me when Dad is at Boston."
    Sixth page:
When I am sick my mom: "let's me come in her room and watch tv. I love you Mom."
    Hope you enjoy - Aprile

  2. Oh Glennon...

Just remember she will be 13, before you know it. And then there will be zit payback...

I know you saw it already, but this is from my Facebook page from yesterday for the rest of the monkees:
Mommy: Lucy honey what is the matter? Is the dragon on tv scaring you?
Lucy: no mommy, I just don't like your clothes.

Yes, she is still 3. Sighhhhhh

  3. That is just the funniest thing. It brought back a memory: when I was about six I was taking ballet lessons. As I was sitting on the floor of the studio, so my mother could try and get my hair into a bun, I turned looked at my mother and said (very loudly) "what are those holes in your face?" I'm sure I lost a lot of hair as my mother yanked me back around. Not sure I ever got an answer, but that was my first introduction to pores. Leave it to the daughters! I think you'll have to save this one for her when she's a teenager. ;)

  6. When Jack was 7 I asked him: What does your mom do when you're not around? His answer? Play on the computer, watch TV or if you ask me, use my brother as a servant.

How are you and your mom different?
    Height, age, and weight, definitely!

    A SERVANT???!!! Nice.

  7. Molly said,
    You are beautiful.

    This is hilarious.

That is all I am typing bc it is not from my computer, and it is with only my index finger. One of my mon chee chees poured water on our keyboard last night. Long story longer: not working. Status quo. Status quo.

    Love,
    Molly

  10. Awesome. My favorite Mother's Day pictures are from the year I was pregnant with Sam. Katie drew me HUGE in every single picture. I mean, really, really enormous with a belly that went out further than my stick person arms could have reached. It's a lot funnier now than it was then, for sure!
    :)MK

  12. Am I the only one who noticed the pearl necklace "details"?? You may have zits, but to fully accessorize on a regular basis? That takes SKILL, lady. I do not have that skill. But I do have zits. So there's that...

Too funny! Almost every day when I'm getting dressed one of the boys says something along the lines of "what are THOSE hanging down there?", or lovingly pinches my back fat while we're cuddling, or giggles maniacally while poking and prodding my belly, proclaiming it "squishy" and "mooshy."

Is it telling that my oldest NEVER draws pictures of me?? Perhaps another, more neurotic mother with panic disorder might wonder... ;)

  13. love this :)
I didn't get any embarrassing moments at mom's day. HOWEVER, when asked to describe what her daddy does for dad's day, my preschooler said that he "works with slaves"

    DOH!!

  14. To add onto the pearl necklace observation, I love that your daughter observed and drew love details all over your face. Heart nose, heart lips, heart shoulders, even heart eyebrows!

And in the picture of you two together, I can see exactly what she saw (well, except for the purple spots!)

  15. Our story is this: When I was 8ish I was watching my mom pluck grey hairs out of her head and asked what she was doing. When she told me, my response was "Well I don't know why you bother pulling them out of the front, they're all OVER in the back!"

  16. One time my best friend (who is in the Army) and I were having lunch with his 5 year-old nephew. My friend was talking about how he has to shave every day. His nephew looked at me and said, "Do you shave your beard, too?"

  17. Love it! I have to agree with two of the above comments: I immediately noticed the pearl necklace and the lovies all over your face in the pic. Beautiful mama!

  18. That is so funny! But one day in the future she will get her very own share of "details"!

  19. Ok, I am with my Sister up there....I almost peed my pants laughing! This makes me think of a mother's day tea that I had with my son who told way too much detail, it hurts a little doesn't it? But, nothing gets by them for sure!

  21. oh my gosh I feel the same way with my kids, my daughter ( 5) told me that I should buy proactive! I was just complaining to my husband this week about still having zits! I thought this "phase" would end once I hit adulthood...so not fair!!

  24. "You're as pretty as a pigeon" was the most memorable line of my 6 y/o's Mother's Day poem to me this year... :-)

  25. I am new to you. Your letter to Chase ... It didn't change me...it's like I found me again..my voice has been silent, tired, tired of always seeing the pain we put our children thru...tired of trying to save little lives, one at a time...but in you, I found me again & I am profoundly grateful..I will read everything written here, get back on my high horse and, once again, ride!
